Hey, I'm new to this forum and wanted to run this problem by you guys. I have a '90 4Runner and it doesn't like to start up when it's warmed up. In the morning, it'll turn right over but as soon as it warms up, I can't get it to restart easily. I have to pump the gas and after a bunch of hesittion, it'll sputter up. Then I can smell gas and it runs like crap. It runs like it missing. Maybe the timing belt's slipped a tooth? Bad fuel injector? I've tried all the easy fixes (new plugs wires and that business with no luck) Any ideas out there? Thanks,Shawn

leaking fuel injectors (causing flooding) or a bad cold start injector

Any idea what these cost to get fixed? This truck is beat to death and I'm just curious if it's even worth taking to the shop! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />

no idea on cost, never paid a shop to do anything 'cept mount tires and alignments.
The CSI is easy to check out since it's right there in the plenum (upper intake). You can pull it and leave the wires hooked up, place it in a jar and see if it squirts right when you crank the engine. I've taken them apart and found them glogged and gummed up as well. Use a small wire or pin to clean the tiny holes in the CSI. The fuel injectors themselves require more work to get to them...especially if its a V6 and they should be professionally cleaned and balanced.

So I'm just curious but why would a clogged up cold start injector cause it to flood. As stated in the original posting, it starts fine when cold but not when hot. From what I've heard, a bad CSI results only in bad starting when cold???????

A leak is a leak; ie you lose pressure regardless. CSI is simply easy to get to in order to determine whether or not your fuel system is holding pressure; you can take it from there to shoot your problem. Check these guys out: Cruzin Performance

Thanks for all your help you guys, I appreciate it! I've never pulled a CSI before and quite frankly don't really know what to look for. Could one of you give me some help with how to pull it out and exactly what to look for? Is this the CSI pictured below or just some type of throttle position sensor? I would guess the CSI has fuel lines and some wires attatched to it. My Hanes doesn't give the exact position. Thanks [img][image] http://img24.exs.cx/img24/4760/DSC403.jpg[/img][/image]

No, the CSI is on the passenger side of the engine compartment. On the side of the plenum you will see a fuel line going to it and a little harness.
I replaced mine a few years back. I think it was about $120 for the part.

In addition to code33 message, as per FSM; you can measure the resistance across the CSI terminals (should be 2-4 ohms). Also, the CSI shouldn't leak more than 1 drop of fuel per minute; if so replace.
