Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ok, I went offroading yesterday and now I have a groaning/grinding noise coming from front end. I notice it when the motor is being torqued such as at takeoff or when accelerating up hill. The noise is worse in 4wd, but it appears the front axel is working (getting traction). Don't think its wheel bearings, they were recently repacked and tightened and no problems till today. Makes me think transfer case? Nothing appears to be binding, except the usual difficulty in turning in 4wd (normal). Any ideas? Anybody has a similar problem?

Mark

EDIT, okay, you have a 88 troop, with 2.6...

grinding in front.. you went wheelin...check the backing plates behind the rotors, for debris, scraping, etc..
Let us know what you find, adn go from there...

Yeah take it to your local rip off power wand type place and wash it off underneath real good. Then see what you hear. I've had a rock behind my rotor befroe and it made all kinds of noise.

But if it only happens in 4wd....Give us a bit more info.

There are several things here that could be the problem.

There is a small needle bearing in the back of the spindle. Usually they are neglected and forgotten..

Is there lube in the front diff?

Does this make sounds all the time? Turning?

Wheel bearings are probably not the problem because they are always turning.

CV boots? U-joints?

Time to crawl under there and take a look.

I had the same kind of misterious noise in 4wd in my Rodeo 2002, during the first 20K miles of its "life". Everything was clean and nothing could be found by my dealer. The noise diappeared after about 20K miles and have never came back yet (it has about 53K miles now). It was a steady scraping metal-like noise of high frequency.

Ok, did the old power wash maneuver underneath. Still a groaning noise on take off. The brake rotors are debris free. the vehicle is 88, 2.6 manual tranny, had autolocking hubs and replaced with warn manual hubs. Wheel bearings are all tight..(recently repacked and tightened). Sound is coming from front, near transfer case. I am wondering if the tranny mount broke and the transfer case and tranny were kinda lopsided on the mount, could this cause binding (just a hypothesis), too cold to check tonight. Any other suggestions. Somebody mentioned needle bearing on the front spindle??? Location and purpose?

Thanks guys

M

Also, its not just a noise, but I can feel it, similiar to binding of sorts. I guess you could say I can feel the trooper having to "work" against it. Hope that makes sense.

I noticed the same noise before discovering the above. Never want to hear it again! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />

EDIT: Also had this junk coming out of my front diff just a few weeks before:
