Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Hi all,
What effect would replacing the stock exhaust manifold with headers (TRD) have on MPG? Right now I am getting about 22 (city) and 28 (hwy) and I don't really want to go any lower than that. Also, would the gains achieved through use of a header diminish if bolted on to the stock Cat and muffler?
Thanks.

You might even gain a bit of mpg, I did with mine, all depends on how much you use the skinny pedal after the mods:D.
And yes, you'll notice more of a difference when the headers are combined with a high-flow exhaust.
BTW-where in North Texas are you?

Headers, Hi-Flow Cat, Hi-Flow muffler should up your MPG. The only problem you will like the way it sounds so you will be putting your foot into the loud pedal more often, bad for gas mileage!!!!

BTW-where in North Texas are you? The Colony, just outside of Plano. I've read several posts here that say that headers only help out on the higher end of the RPM range. That probably won't suit me since this is my DD. But it sure is fun tinkering with stuff...

Depends on the header style, a 4-into-1 setup will be better for top end, but a Tri-y like the Doug Thorley headers will increase torque a bit.
Plano eh? Figgered you weren't anywhere near me out here in BFE

I agree! Raspy, louder, and heavy heavy foot arent helping my gas consumption since I put mine on 2 weeks ago. Daily driving at its finest!!

As mentioned headers will help with the power/mileage providing you keep your foot out of it. However, I have noticed with my 3.0 since the headers, exhaust etc., I am getting the same mpg as before about (17 mpg combined) while enjoying the gain in power. I haven't been able to keep my foot off the throttle long enough to see how much mpg I have gained driving conservatively.

Anytime you let an engine breath easier it will help MPG and performance!!! You don't see mufflers and Air Filters on Funny Cars, Double A Fuel Dragsters But you might see an air filter on Piston Airplanes, but no mufflers!!!!! I'm not sure which caused my drop in mpg.I went back to stock manifold and stock tires.Thought my mileage would improve,NADA!! Why would you think that, tires yes, stock manifolds choked the engine!!!
