22RE Connectors (TPS, H2O temp) - Symptoms of bad connectors #535445 12/08/04 02:07 AM

I have two connectors that are broken on my 22RE - the TPS connector and the connector going to the coolant temp sensor at the water neck. Both are broken on the wire harness side, not at the sensor side. I can get them to stay connected by taping them together, but the fix is temporary.

If the H2O connector is disconnected, what will the ECU think and do? Will it affect fuel delivery or ignition timing? EGR?

When the TPS is disconnected, I get rough idle, bad mileage, and horrible transition (jerky).

Does anyone know if replacement connectors are available? I'm not sure how they would be installed... ideas?

Thanks for any input!

Need a Spot
There was a recent thread in the 4Runner and Truck section of the Yotatech forum that addressed aftermarket connectors. I forget the specific web site addresses, but there were a number of suppliers listed. The connectors weren't particularly cheap, but I believe they were less expensive than from a dealer.

theif, the MIL (Check Engine Light) did not go off for either the TPS or H2O temp disconnections.

What is the EPROM? I'm very interested in how the ECU works.

I have no problem with a used connector if I can find one, although it makes me sick to hack up a perfectly good harness... maybe I'll find a celica I can violate.

Rear the Technical Articles on this site for an explanation of how the ECU works. EPROM would be the term for an Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory chip. I think the ECU has more of a battery backed memory where it stores things like trouble codes, engine settings, etc. That's how you can reset it, by disconnecting power for a period of time. It also has a PROM where the main engine operating code is stored.
