Getting the Wheeling Fever
Every time I release my clutch in first gear and sometimes second, there is a chirping noise. It has slowly gotten worse but does not seem to effect my acceleration. The only time it doesn't happen is when I pop the clutch.

What could this be? I have replaced this damned clutch 3 times in the past two years because of various problems and now that I have one that seems to work right, it is chirping now...

Thanks,

Rich

Iffin' it's gear specific then I'd lean more toward a transmission problem rather than the clutch or related bearings. There are afew tranny experts here so stay tuned and maybe some one will chime in. Clutches don't bother me, but personally, I'd rather take apart a Rolex than rebuild a transmission

I've had the exact same thing happen to me. It only happens in first or second gear and only when I am revving the engine for a faster start. I thought it was the t/o bearing so I replaced that and the pilot bearing (the clutch components only had about 10K on them). The noise went away for about 8 months but is now gradually coming back. Very frustrating, I don't know what to do...

hmmmm. I just hope it is just a noise and nothing will break.

...but it is never just a noise.

Interesting..... my '91 I just sold did that same thing before I put a new clutch kit into it...it would also pop out of first gear. After the complete clutch rebuild all symptoms went away.
On my current 86 4Runner I have the opposite problem two of you guys have....I get noise when the clutch IS NOT depressed ....push in the clutch and all is quiet.

Good Luck,
shaggy

Shaggy, My 91 does that also. I checked my Factory Service Manual and it suggested that the throw out bearing was one of the main culprits so I bought a clutch kit but haven't put it in yet. I have two friends who are mechanics and they thought it was the throw out bearing also.
