I am trying to revive some old jerry cans and I need to replace their gaskets. Any suggestions where I can find the proper rubber, the proper type, that doesn't melt in contact with gasoline/petrol? I had some messy experiences with rubber melting and jery cans leaking all over..:( what's better betwen silicon compounds, neoprene, rubber? if anybody here manufactured their own gaskets out of something that can be easily found at the local hardware store and it worked without leaks, i would deeply appreciate the info. Obviously, there are some trustworthy companies manufacturing custom seals and gaskets out there but since I would order a very limited amount it is more feasible to go the hardware store route. thanks w.

Try and find a small remnant of Viton R at a local plastic supply house. We use that for fuel seals on turbine engines, should be plenty stout enough for your application.

Try Major's Surplus or Cheaper than Dirt. If you only need a couple, I got 10 or so several years ago and can give you a couple if you still need them (I assume you're talking about the old military "Blitz" cans). IM me. Bonus: Everything you wanted to know about Jerry Cans: http://www.rocketcityrockcrawlers.com/memberstuff/al/JerryCanPaperV1.2.pdfThanks, Al

azrain is right. look for viton gaskets, seals or o-rings. I manage a facility that handles haz-mat and we use alot of viton gaskets and seals. they handle petroleum products very well.
