265 & 285 is the section width of the tire in millimeters... 10.6" vs. 11.4"... The second # in the equation is the aspect ratio (percentage of section width, represented in sidewall height). Your stock size was 265/70r16, so that's 10.4" wide by 30.6" tall. Conversely, 265/75r16 is 10.4" wide by 31.6" tall & 285/75r16 is 11.4" wide by 32.8" tall.
Fwiw, I run 265/75r16's on my wife's '01 4Runner, stock wheels, no wheel or coil spacers, no rubbing - even at full stuff.
4xGeek (Chris) '97 T-100 4wd sr5-suto, 3" BL, 1.5" BJ spacers, 35" ProComp AT's, 4.88's, Bilsteins x 6, etc... No longer stuck in SoCal!!

ok I think I get it.
Man I should have paid more attention in math class. So is there an area where the 1st set of measurements ends in millimeters, and inch measurements begin?
For example:
285/75r16 (then next size up is) 33/11.5/16
Oh...... don't you love the new guys.
Tks again,
Drew

Also, some tires run larger than others. Go to the tire manufacturers website and they will give you EXACT tire measurements for each tire. So one 285/75/16 tire might measure 32" tall while another manufacturer's 285/75/16 might actually meausure up t 33" tall.

The first ever upgrade I did to my rig was going to 265/75-16 BFG at's, they measured 31.8" diameter and had very little rubbing during full compression, with the wheels turned.
You'll only need a body lift, or suspension lift when going to 33's.
