Who has towed a 3000 pound plus trailer with their 5 spd V6 third gen? Preferably those of you who are lifted with bigger tires. I have the 3.4 V6 with a 5spd and 4.30 gears on 33" tires and today I tried to tow a 3000 pound camper. It was fine until I tried to start on a hill from a stop-then I smoked the hell out of the clutch and didn't move. This was a pretty steep hill. I am wanting to know if I could tow 3000 to 3500 pounds reliably with 4.88 gears in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, so:

Please tell me what you have towed with your specs on your vehicle and your gear ratio and tire size. Tacoma guys please respond too.

4.88's (now) and 33's (285's), V6, 5 spd.

Pulled a utility trailer at 3000 plus a couple of times on flat land, I wasn't overwhelmed with the performance... Even with the old 4.10's it was not a Mack truck. Pulling 3000 plus on a regular basis up and down hills is going to be a chore for the 3rd Gen. I would suggest another choice in tow vehicles if this is going to be a semi-daily thing (towing that kind of weight.)

I tow a 1300 lb. Wells Cargo enclosed trailer (loaded) three to four times a week and it pushes the 3rd Gen. around quite a bit. Food for thought.

It would be for pulling a camper on a roundtrip from anywhere from about 50 to 500 miles maybe 8 times a year tops. I pull a camper that weighs about 1800-2000 pounds loaded with it now with my current 4.30 gears with no problem-I can even cruise at 75-80 mph on the interstate with it. Given, when I come up on a big hill, I loose a good bit of speed and have to drop it to fourth and sometimes 3rd on a long hill. The camper I'm looking at would be about 3500-3700 pounds loaded and about 19' in total length with one axle and 14" wheels.
