Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ok, my cruise control finally went out. Ever since I got a hold of it (2002), the cruise control would only work if I held the accel switch on the lever for like 30-45 seconds. Do these things work by vaccum? Does anybody have any suggestion as to where to start diagnosing? I have checked vacuum line and so far everything looks ok. Any ideas would be a big help.

The CC on my '89 LS Troop works (or doesn't) about as you describe. I got my rig about three years ago and it wasn't working at all at first. I found out with a little exploring there is a cable that hooks into the back of the gas pedal that does the dirty work inside the cab. I'm not sure what makes it work on the other side of the firewall, however. Yeah, it works, but much like yours. That is, not too well at all. I just stopped trying to use it after a while.

Merry Christmas

Hmm..ok, thanks for the reply. I will check out the cable in the back of the pedal. Minor problem but can be annoying on long trips. I suppose I have more important issues on the vehicle that I should deal with first.

That's pretty much been the case for me as well...more important issues...like, keeping the beast on the road at all!

I have yet to run across much of anything that describes how to "tune" the CC gear on this rig, but then, I could look a little deeper into the subject than I have.

I have the Haynes manual and a two-volume Helms factory manual, so if I muster some time this week maybe I'll take a closer look. I don't want to say "they all do this" but mine behaves exactly as you described yours: sluggish to get set and not too reliable overall. Just finding the cable under the pedal certainly helped anyway!

I have noticed the CC, once it takes, does work better on a long flat drive relatively free of up and down grades. That's partly due to the auto tranny, I think. The autos on these universally have always had to "search" for the right gear a lot of the time, so coupled with the finicky CC can make for unpleasant cruising on the highway. I just gave up trying.

Will check back if I get some research done.
