Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello all,
I have a 94 xtracab pickup. I am building an enclosure for an 8" sub. I am going to put it in the storage compartment in the back-seat bench. I haven't got the sub yet. The compartment is only 8.75" wide. Here's my question: is this wide enough to fit the sub? I know it probably varies from sub to sub, but about how wide is the entire 8" sub? Is it the actual moving speaker that is 8", or is the entire unit, plastic mounting ring and all, 8" wide? Hope this makes sense. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks and happy holidays!

You can't just put a sub in there without an enclosure (box). It will sound like complete garbage.

you have to make a compete box in there BUT you want to get your internal volume of that box as close to one as you cen get it or iwhatever they sub you want reccomends. A seald box always sounds best but if it has to be really small you might want to port it to comensate for small volume. You wont be able to get a really good high spl sub becuase mose of them require a large mounting depth. if you want a spl sub with only a 4 inch mounting depth get a audiobahn pro compression. also dont get a 8" subn go for a 10

Thanks for the input. It is greatly appreciated! And correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought a ported enclosure was supposed to be bigger than a sealed one.........And I'm with you, I'd much rather go for a 10", but the place I'm building the box for is only 8.75" wide.....

So my box will be 8.5" wide. Will it be ok if the sub mounting ring/frame overhangs that a little bit? Thanks again!

Thanks for the reply. So is the metal frame about 1" wide or so?

It all depends on the speaker manufacturer... My 8" Kicker's have 7/16" lip all the way around, but my roommates Fosgate has 1/2". You need to decide on a speaker *before* you start to plan a box. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" />
