Getting the Wheeling Fever
I noticed that Jeep has come out with a diesel engine Jeep Liberty for 2005. I sure would like Toyota to do the same for one of their trucks in North America. Why should Europe, Africa, Australia and South America have all the fun?

I have emailed Toyota in the past regarding the availability of deisel trucks coming to the North American market. The reply was that it is not happening but we would forward your ideas and wishes to our marketing department. Any chance some of you deisel fans could do the same? The more that lobby, the more there is a chance for the head shead at Toyota to deliver...

Could Toyota have some competition?

Sounds like there's a real chance that the new Tundra will have a diesel. But that's a few years off.

i'd say the liberty is going to be a litmus test for toyota. i think it'll be popular(well, as popular as a liberty can be ), TDI volkswagens have a pretty big following

toyota isn't a leader any more, but a follower. they won't chance putting out a diesel until it's shown to be profittable here

In this country, maybe you are right. But have you seen the cool off-road worthy Toyotas that the third world gets?

One more thing.... Toyota just took over the #3 slot for world wide vehicle manufacturers from who?? That's right, the makers of the Jeep Liberty, Daimler-Chrysler . So I guess my question would be: who is following who?

Hopefully the Liberty diesel sells like gang-busters. Perhaps Toyota will follow-suit a year or two behind like they did with the double cab chassis.

Oh, and bring me the Japanese built 2005 Hilux with its fully boxed frame and direct injected intercooled diesel engine.

One thing I don't get is why there isn't any importing going on... Ricers do it all the time with J-spec motors; I did one on my old Integra. Wasn't a big deal, even living in PRK (People's Republic of Kalifornia ). I just had to go see a referee (who did a smog check on it & checked for 02 sensors & cats), paid a fee & got a sticker for my hassle. I imagine a turbo diesel in the 3-4 liter range would be a nice addition to any of our rigs (but especially for the T100 )

Eh, I'll look more into it sometime in the next 200k miles. I figure it ought to take about that long for this one to go.

I knew a guy who transplanted a later model 2LT diesel into his 4Runner. It took quite a bit of work and customization for it to work. In the end, he has a neat and very unique rig, but I can easily outrun him on the highway, even though I weigh a lot more and only have a 22RE. I still love his set up, don't get me wrong, but after seeing the trouble and nominal gains, I'm not as hot for a diesel transplant as I was before.

In my opinion, the older diesels are interesting and cool, but in the end, what you get is less h.p. a nominal increase in torque at lower rpms and nominal increase in gas mileage. And forget about doing much over 65 on the freeway.

The real advantages come from the later model electronic fuel injected diesels, but they are extremely expensive. Thousands of dollars just for a used motor, if you can find one. Then putting it in is a whole other ball game. The wiring headaches are the same or worse as trying to install a later model V-6 or 3RZ into an older Toyota.

In the end, transplanting a 3.4 V-6 is easier to do, probably cheaper and motors are more readily available, so that's the motor most guys are doing now.

400,000+ km's on my non-turbo 52 hp '92 VW Jetta diesel,
no electricals whatsoever, mechanical pump, all original, never lifted head. Payed for, fully rustproofed, original paint.
Good for another 200,000 at least.
Drives great, who cares about speed, cruise at 120 km easily on highway.
Perfect cheapskate car for me!
