What is the reccommended interval to change these? I've read about people breaking thiers, and don't really feel like breaking mine. I got a 85 22R

Anytime I have the engine apart for something now...Ive been one of the lucky ones with mine not snapping but skipping enough so that I took out all 8 valves. I wouldnt exceed 120,000 miles as rule of thumb. Pull your valve cover and check condition of chain guides, if still there whole then no worries. If drivers side guide is broken or gone, order a kit asap.

just finishing up doing the timing chain on my '88. Not the original motor, and i have no idea how many miles on it, but the guides were broken, the chain had almost worn throgh into the water jacket, and i was missing 4 teeth off the lower chain sprocket. and oh yah, 2 bent intake valves.

After hearing that I'm afraid to tear mine apart It's been rattling for ~5000m.

The 'new' 88 4runner I just inherited from my uncle has dual-row. I thought that was a cool bonus. I have half a mind to see if it's possible to swap my 89 P/U to dual row when I finally get going and do the headgasket. One of those might-as-wells while I'm in there.

LC Engineering sells a kit to convert to a dual timing chain. I read you can actually lose a couple ponies by doing this due to the extra drag on the engine.
