Getting the Wheeling Fever
This last week, my 91 4Runners transfer case stopped me dead in the road. I was in 4hi, and driving 20mph in 2" of snow, then the car skidded to a stop. I shifted to 2hi, and it drove fine (except for no traction because of the snow) but in 4hi or 4lo, the car wouldnt budge. A year and a half ago, the transfer case let go, and stopped me in the road, but that time the tranfer case acted like it was in neutral. The shop that repaired it said something had to be welded in the case, but I didnt see first hand what exactly needed welding. So the question is- Are the Toyota transfer cases crap, or is there an upgrade that can be done to mine? I wanted a reliable vehicle, but this is working out to be frustrating to say the least.

Are they crap, that is a big NO!!! You do not say in your post what you have a 4 cylinder or a V-6. If it is a V-6 I have one that I will give you for free, just come pick it up!!!!

To all of you on this BB if you do not have a signature with what the heck you have as a rig, do one, it helps a lot when we are trying to answer questions. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Ya, I'll fix that sig thing, after this post. Anyway, its a V6, and I love the thing, except for the 'case problems. Are you giving away a transfer case in good condition, and usable? That's a great offer- -thanks. Is Roseville north of Sacramento? Mapquest shows Roseville by San Diego also.

Sounds like a broken chain inside the case.

Yes David lives near Sacramento. Several years ago he converted from the stock chain drive transfer case to a Marlin Crawler gear driven transfer case setup. Nothing wrong with the stock one, but now he has lower gearing off road. Luckily for you he doesn't ever throw anything away, you get a perfectly good transfer case for free.

Thanks for the replys, guys....I need to have my trans shop (who worked on it before) at least tear it apart and check the damage. If its bad, I'll be doing a road trip! Thanks again.
