I am thinking of purchasing a set of 4.56 or 4.89 gears to accomodate the bigger tires I am installing on my 4Runner.
Can anyone tell me what the price would be on these gear sets? Which one is a better set? And last but not least, how much am I looking at to have a mechanic install them for me?? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

What year 4Runner? (SA front or IFS) Stick or auto? 22R(E) or 3.0? What tire size are you planning/wanting/considering?

Your profile says you have a 87 22re. It would be worth a shot to search junkyards for stock front and rear 4.88 diffs from a 31" tire equipped, automatic 3.0 2nd gen 4Runner. Try www.car-part.com

I have an 87 Toyota 4Runner 5 speed manual with a 22re 4 cylinder EFI. I am going to run 31 inch Baja Claws for now but plan to upgrade to 33" later on.

As Adam F said try and find some of those factory 4.88's. Search car-parts.com and/or the local boneyards. I got my rear end with 4.88's out of a '94 4runner for $250. You can find 'em for less than that if you look hard enough.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've been searching for 4.88's for a while and thought I finally found one in an '89 auto 3.0 4runner. The door jamb code listed G254, which is 4.56's. I'm confused on what exactly contains the 4.88's. After researching, it seems only the auto 22re's with 31" tires have the 4.88's. Is this true?
