Need a Spot
I have an 87 4Runner 22re 5 speed. When I am on a highway or going uphill and I shift into 4th gear I stop accellerating and the rpm's rev way up if I give it too much gas. The same happens in 5th gear. A friend of mine told me it had to do with my clutch? Does anyone have any input as to what is wrong and how I can fix this problem?
Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a slipping clutch to me. to test it put the truck in 4th and try to start from a standing still. if the truck jumps or stalls clutch my be good, if it revs up and the truck slowly moves. the clutch is in need of replacement.............Karl

Clutch probably needs replacing before you ruin your flywheel, if you already hadn't!!

I had a problem like that on my truck. After replaceing the slave cyl.(It needed it). I notice that after bleeding the clutch. I still had slipage. The rod on the slave cyl. was max'd out. I look in my Shelton manual and notice that their is a rod that can be adjusted on the clutch pedal. I had alot of play(up and down) movement. The rod unscrewed itself making it shorter, hence more pedal play.(two nuts not tight against each other). Did that on the pedal, backed off the slay cyl rod,(Had lots of tension on the pitch fork. Making me think that the clutch needed to be replaced.) Until it started engaging about a 1 inch up off the floor board. The PO had it all wacked out. That worked for me. Just giving you a different idea to check on. Might just need to be adjusted.

if the clutch pedal does not have any play in it, you may have it set up to be permanatly riding the clutch. You need that free play to it can disengage properly.

If the pedal is right, then the clutch is dead. You'll have to pull the tranny.

ARB the specs for the pedal play is good. I'm not saying to take all the play out. On mine..I had about 41/2 inches. And the rod on the slave had more tension on the fork then what needed/ which was taking pressure off the clutch making it slip.

Time to pull the assembly apart, have the flywheel cleaned/cut and install a new disk. Your clutch is slipping. 4th or 5th gear when pulling a hill....yup been there and done did that one. Mine was from contamination, little bit of oil or gear lube goes along way in ruining a clutchs day. You can do all the checks and adjustments suggested, but if it were me in your shoes (do wear 8-1/2 by chance?) I'd rather only do those adjustments once after the new clutch was installed and flywheel reconditioned.

But thats just me. OEM clutch kits for low price can be had from JTOutfitters.com No need to pay the extra money for centerforce unless your friends will think you are a god for forking out the extra $100 for the name.
