I just bought an 84 xtra cab (22r) with automatic hubs. The owner said one had trouble engaging and once engaged, had trouble dissengaging. I have an 88 v6 4runner as a parts truck for my daily driver. Will the manual hubs from the 88 work on the 84? I found the article on this site about swapping manuals in, but it didn't mention compatibility between years. ( http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autohub/) It says that an install kit consisting of some large nuts and washers is required. Would these parts already be on the 88 for me to reuse? Thanks.

No. Solid axle and IFS manual hubs are not interchangeable. Well, at least the splinned inner section where the axle shaft slides in. Dunno if you could swap over the inner sections.

the hubs are not interchangable as stated, but if you have access to the spindle/ rotor assembly now would be great time to swap it over to vented front brakes. just do a search on PBB for more info. my '85 eventually will get this upgrade.........Karl

just curious since eits a hub posting. can you use the body and hub dial from a ifs hub for a solid axle if the inner splined ring is swapped out. i know the axle stub has a different spline count. i have 2 hubs that the dials and springs are wasted and good ifs hubs laying here.

After searching online some more, I found this article which might help you out. www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/aisin/ "The 26-spline (IFS) Toyota hub has a deeper backspacing between the mounting flange and the inner hub than the other hubs, in order to clear the spindle nuts. Because of this, the Suzuki or 30-spline Toyota hub body will not fit on an IFS toyota wheel hub, but the reverse should work; i.e. a 26-spline Toyota hub body should be usable on a Suzuki or 30-spline Toyota hub."
