 87 Trooper II Engine Swap

I have a 1987 Isuzu Trooper II, with a rebuilt 4 cylinder 2.3L engine. I'm doing research to determine what engine I can swap with my current. I would like to swap my 2.3L a bigger engine with more horsepower and more torque. But I'm not sure what engines I can swap, with few or no major modifactions needed. I know that I can use a 4 cylinder 2.6L, but I wasn't sure if that would be a worth wild swap or not. I've also looked at the 89 6 cylinder 2.8L, but was unsure if they could be switched out. Thanks.

Do you have a Automatic Transmission by chance?
If so, and its a four speed (30-80le/AW4/A340H) there is a number of engines that can be swapped.

With a manual transmission the only engine that is direct bolt on from the 2.3L engine is the 2.6L engine. Now if you want to change transmission and build some custom motor mounts, just about any thing is possible. Of course though, it will $$$.

If so, and its a four speed (30-80le/AW4/A340H) there is a number of engines that can be swapped. If I understand you correctly , the 2.3 auto has many swap options, could this be the same for the 2.6? I have an 89 automatic with a 2.6 , what are the options for swap outs for me?
