Getting the Wheeling Fever
The problem: went to start truck in the AM and the charge light/brake light stay on even after warm up.
At 1500 or higher the lights go out. I checked voltage at the batt. (12.5v) with the motor on and the same off.
Unable to check alt itself, couldn't get test leads down there.
Possible voltage reg. toast? Not putting out enough amps? Previous Owner has confirmed it is an aftermarket (Pep Boys) alt.
When driven, its fine.
Truck: 88 Runner 3VZE.
TIA!

I am having the same issue with my 87 runner. I put in a napa alt & all was fine for a few months. Now that it is cold my alt/brake lights flicker until warm then go away most of the time, but at times they still flicker.

Any ideas?

At idle with 12.5 volts try a hammer wack and see if the brushes make contact. Cheap fix ~12.00 from the Dealer new brushes to solder in.

I had a similar problem On my 86 PU. The light would come on then I would rev it and it would go away till the next time I would start. It finally just stayed on. I changed the alt, 85 bucks. Then the lights just stayed on so I had the ALT place look at it. We tried to find all the relays, turns out I didn't have one. Apparently there was two different Interal Regulators on the the alt for that year. They changed it and it works fine. No @#%# brake/charge light. Yea!! Other things to try check brake switch, see how tight your belt is, and all of your wires. Try to find all of your relays some are in weird spots. I know now that I would ask more about the alternators before you buy or fix them. Also check all of the relays. I sure hated to have my electrical problem so good luck hopefully you can find it.

take it to Walmart or some chain and they'll check it free.

guys,
Turned out the alt needed to be rebuilt. I had gotten it wet with salt water from the beach at rosarito a few weekends ago. Brushes and some other parts needed replacing. cost me $80 and the guy bumped me up from 60 to 80 amps...wohoo!!! No more charge/brake light.
