Need a Spot
This weekend I sliced the sidewall of my front right tire and I'm wondering if it's now junk. The tire is a 245/75R-16 BFG AT KO. The cut is about a 1/16th of an inch deep (maybe a fraction more)and runs pretty much the width of the sidewall. It's holding air fine and I had to drive home on it about 50 miles.

Since this is a family SUV as well, I just want to make sure the the tire is not going to let loose on freeway with the wife/kids on board.

Get a new tire? Keep the one I have? Please let me know what your thoughts are and why. Thanks in advance for you help. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Roll Me Over
It should be fine, these type of slices are common from running the trails. the slices that are bad are when they go all the way through the side of the tire(common on thin sidewalled tires). The BFGs are 3 ply sidewalls IIRC, so you probably didn't even slice through the first ply. For comparison, I have a set of the BFG AT's that are comming up on 8 yrs old, and they have slices in them that are about 1/4", go a good 1/4 to 1/3 around the tire, some of the slices actually spread open when aired down, and they still hold air no problem.

The rule of thumb is, if you can see cords then the tire should be replaced. If you had the road hazzard warranty on them, the tire store wouldn't warranty them out, since they wouldn't be considered unsafe.

If you are concerned, you could move it to the rear.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.
