mechanic put everything back together on the timing belt replacement. said during test drive she had no power. took off plenum, checked compression, said not firing on two cylinders. can this be the result of the timing belt breaking? i am running down there right now to inspect the damage.

if it's a DOHC than it's an interferance engine which can result in bent valves. Here is a list95 is DOHC I believe.

Our 95, also and LS like his, has the 3.0, not the 3.5

Makes sense. My 93 3.0 broke and I had no damage.

If the deck and heads have been over-milled, the 3.0L can become an interference motor fairly quickly.

The last V6 non-interference engine on the Montero is '93. According to the Gates site, all 3.0 and 3.5 DOHC/SOHC engines from '94 on are interference.
I'm afraid you are toast.
Sorry,

I just checked the Gates catalog - it shows the '94 SOHC 3.0L as the last non-interference motor. All '95+ and all 24V motors are interference type.
Still, it doesn't sound good for chances that a '95 isn't - as you say - toast.

thanks fellas. i was hoping for good news but if more than one person on this board says it is interference engine that i have then it must be.
at this point i'm gonna pay for the t-belt/h20 pump in Aspen and then limp down or tow it down to Glenwood Springs. when i saw that it was 10 hours of labor at $95 in Aspen or 10 hours of labor at $65 it was an easy choice to make, $950 vs. $650.
it kills me to think that i'm gonna put 2k dollars of engine work into a vehicle that is only worth 4k total.

So what did the mechanic tell you was the problem?

Look at it as having a vehicle you love in great shape for only 2k! I would honestly rather have my Monty than any new vehicle made right now...of course I'd LOVE to put a bunch of money into it, but I'm just really happy with it and plan to keep it...she's one of my best friends.
