Ok I really don't want to drop 300 for a Tom Woods C/V style rear shaft
My question is what are my alternatives... this is a trail rig that will be SOA front with 1/4 eliptic rear moved back about 8" (YJ)

I have been told and have seen people use an XJ front shaft and have a drivline shop fix it up.. just wanted soem thoughts from you guys..it seems to work well but then again why does tom woods charge an arm and a leg for his??.... just want to do it correctly but sometimes researching what others have done saves alotta $$ <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a driveshaft shop cut down an already existing shaft to the dimensions you need. I would suggest a front shaft from any pre-2003 (or whatever year they went to independent rear suspension) Ford Explorer. They have a fairly large diameter, thick wall tube and a CV joint at the transfer case end. You'll need the proper Torx bit to remove it at the junkyard.
I use these on my CJ's and cut them down myself.
Tom's prices aren't any higher than anyone else's for a new shaft. They are all new parts and the DOM tubing used is not cheap.

i too have heard of the use of a XJ front shaft cut to length. it sounds very doable, and i have had a driveline shortened by my local shop for 40$. if you can find a good shaft i think a 40$ experiment offsets the cost of a 300$ shaft.

I hope those XJ front shafts are better than a YJ's

the early XJ shafts are flimsy straws, along the same lines as the YJ's. the latter XJ shafts were upgraded to a much more robust design in the early-mid 90's, when they front axle when from disconnect to non disconnet. i have one laying in the back yard if you would like a picture.
