I wanted to ask those of you that have the Tera low gears in their T-cases. How loud does yours whine in warm and cold weather? Mine whine a little in warm weather, but this past week, the temperature dropped down in the single digets. I drove it into town and had to use 4 wheel drive. The thing whined so loud, I thought that there had to be a problem. It was hard to talk over it. What do you all think about this?

I haven't experienced that problem. Mine are only "leer jet" loud when I'm in 3rd or 4th gear (approx 15mph).

Mine whine a bit, but the whine is constant no matter the temp. and we have had some sub zero weather this winter. I have only had them a few months tho if that makes any difference. How long have you had them in ?

I just had them put in this past summer. It must be temperature related. I drove it this afternoon and it was not as loud. The temperature got up to 52 degrees today. But when it was 7 degrees a few days ago, it would not quiet down, even after I drove about 15-20 minutes.

I noticed it more when I extended the t-case breather up into the center console, But it;s pretty much the same all the time, hot or cold. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> probably normal, it does get a bit colder there though so that may play a factor in it. What kind of oil do you have in it? I ran mine with dino oil for a while then swapped to Mobil one for temp reasons.

I haven't had any differences in noise related to temp.

ditto on the oil choice. go to a full synthetic and it should help level out the temperatures and give you the same effect hot or cold.


I've been lucky and never really noticed the whining problem since i've own my Tera's. over the past few years, i have been running a full synthetic in the tcase and experimented with a variety of viscositys

Rob dont leave us hangin' here, what are the present results of your experimenting ?

well, i experimented with the different oils and viscositys not because of noise problems, but because of heat issues due to decreased volume because of my dual tcase project.

I plugged up a guage to measure the temp of the oil in the MUA tcase bath (the case that was cut in half, also the one that contains the Teras). basically, after about an hour of steady driving at 65mph, the guage will climb to its maximum reading of 250 degrees (and probably continue to get hotter).

I experimented with running 5w-30 full synthetic as well as full synthetic 80w-90 gear oil and about everything in between (as well as some additives). Basically, none of it made a difference, after 1hr of driving, the temp would still continue to climb out of control.

none of the oil choices i played with made much of a difference in sound, at least not that i picked up on (but again, thats not the problem i was trying to solve)

Did you ever put a cooler and a pump on that, or is it not much of a concern now that it's a trailer only rig.

I'm guessing the latter.

I wouldn't have expected the synthetic to run cooler, but it will protect better when at those elevated temps. The synth won't break down as quick under the heat.
