ok ok ok i know, im going to get into trouble for saying this, but what is the better engine suited to a 88-95 toyota 4x4???

22re has the advantage of being light

3.0 has the advantage of power

oh, no posts on the 2.7s, 3.4s or supra engines, cause we all know they are better than stock, but i want to know stock engines

22re takes reliability
22re takes mileage (most of the time)

3.0 can hit 60 in under 10 seconds
3.0 can pull a trailer
3.0 has 6 cylinders



so what else, i am going to be buying a newer truck soon (looks like i have to wait til summer now) but need to know v6 or 4banger

You pretty much nailed it. The 3.0's power by the numbers looks better than the power to the ground in real use, based on experience after having owned a 4Runner and a truck. Worked pretty well in the truck with decent mileage, 16-21mpg. Was a bad dream in a heavy lifted 4Runner, 11-15 mpg, but none of the power you would expect in a motor delivering such mileage - even in good tune. I have had to replace headgaskets (and a short block) in both 3.0s I've owned, and one 22RE longblock due to headgasket failure, so that is not an absolute advantage for the 22RE (except its easier to do, see below). The 22RE could have been decked and the flippin' HONE marks were still visible at 149K miles, the 3.0 block was absolute toast (wife kept driving... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />).

22RE is simpler, MUCH simpler to work on, so if you are thinking a higher mileage vehicle it's another advantage.

For me at least, the advantages and disadvantages between the two extend beyond the motor. With the V6, you get a stronger transmission, bigger radiator, stronger rear third member (and bigger front brake calipers???). With the 22RE, you get the gear driven transfer case, which really is the best single component in Toyota pickups and 4Runners. If you get a turbo truck you get all of the best components. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

22r series is better to me, I consider the 3.0 motor an average engine. Toyota did an admiral job fixing the 3.0 headgasket problems, but the problem still existed. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/oink.gif" alt="" />

Or you can swap in a R151 tranny and bits and get all that. Sure the R150 is incrementally better, and the R151 is another increment better than that, but the W56 is no slouch and not worth replacing unless you have other reasons. I had other reasons.

I think the best Toyota truck is the one you build from the best Toyota bits. More fun too.

3.0 without a doubt. I've had several V6 trucks and several 22RE trucks. A 3.0 in a first gen 4Runner will outrun a 22RE in a pickup. Both get the same mileage(talking 86-90 trucks/4Runners) and both will run a long time when maintained. The V6 and turbo give you the stronger components as well. My 87 turbo 4Runner was a blast, but it got 14 mpg so consider that. I've never had a 22RE that could get better than 17.5 mpg with my local driving and the V6 will bring down that same number. As for the 90-95 4Runners, I've never had one but they seem to be dogs no matter what because of the weight.

I have never had a 22R (but I did have an 18R?? in a 1970 Toyota HiLux Pickup). I have a 3.0 and I think it is a good engine. The 4Runner is heavy and with big tires etc it is hard to get it up to speed. However, once you do there is no problem. It tows well (I have a couple of different boats). It gets reasonable mileage -( I am in Canada and convert kilometers and liters to miles per Imperial gallon - on average over the past 4 years - in town and out - summer and winter - I am getting a little over 19 mpg- in summer on the highway I get about 24 - so not bad for size and weight). I am very happy with how quickly it heats up in winter and how much heat it produces.
In a nutshell, I like it. I think the 22R might be ok in a pickup but I think it would be lacking in a 2nd gen 4Runner.
