im in the process of installing, rather getting the front third member put in my truck, 87 4runner.

the part is a 94 V6 third, i took it to the mechanic and he wanted to pull the gears out of the housing and install them into my current third, which wont even take an 8" ring gear anyways...soo...

i was sure that the install was little more than bolting the longer DS shaft to the V6 pumpkin housing, and the PS CV would fit.

should i even bother with this guy? ive done my measurements and everything seems to check out ok..

any input appreciated.

if your tring to put an 8" V6 third into an IFS housing, it won't fit. the V6 third will bolt right into your rear axle housing though.
as you stated the V6 is an 8" gear set, the IFS is a 7¢" gear set. they are not interchangable.
now if you have a solid front axle(SAS) then the third will bolt right in no problem...........Karl

Yeah, bringing up the 8" ring gear got me confused.
If you are swapping your current IFS Diff assemby from the '87, to a '94 IFS Diff assembly, no mods are needed, just a straight swap. Here's what I ran into on Monday. '86 SR5 pickup, IFS. (4.10). Replaced with a '94 4Runner diff, IFS, (4.88). The '94 diff had extra "stuff" attached to it because it came from a vacuum activated 4WD switch. Is this the case for what you are doing? Let me know thus far before I go further.

Go to the nearest Toyota Parts Dept. Get this:
Quote
1 - Seal - diff side gear tube - 90311-35032

Just pull the arm and axle sticking out of the '94 Diff, install this seal, and use the existing arm and axle from your '87. I am assuming that you have manual locking hubs in your front axles?
The ADD diff, (from the '94) does not have this seal. Gear lube is needed to get to the vacuum activated fork actuator. Your '87 will have this seal, you will see it. Install new seal to new diff. It will make perfect sense to you once you pull the arm/axles out of each Diff. Whatever you do, do not remove and gears/carriers from the new diff. Don't need to. Enjoy the 4.88's!

You can do THIS to the 94 Diff. But use the seal and just use the arm ans axle from your '87. Much simpler and cleaner look, best part, just as effective
