Getting the Wheeling Fever
Getting ready ti install a new 15 gallon tank on a 86' Cj7 project. Is there any reason, besides emmisions, to run any lines besides the main line to the pump. Do I need to worry about a vent line? Let me know. Thanks in advance for any help.

From what I know about that tank, you should run the line that runs forward, and then the return line, then there should be a third for your charcoal filter. That is it... They all serve their own purpose. You "should" connect all three to your new tank.

A charcol filter will cut your cars emmissions down by 20% you don't need it. It really is illegal even if they don't check for it, and how easy is it to install? Don't go cheap and lazy.

Every Gasoline tank needs a vent of some sort. Air has to get in when fuel goes out. I have a friend running his 85 258 with no return line, no problems.

Pete I think the reason for the return is to get the bubbles out of the line! remember the line goes across the top of the engine all the while in the airflow of the radiator. I betcha on a good Texas day there is more bubbles in there than liquid.

The vent line will allow you to fill your tank faster!
Without the vent line, how will the air get out when the fuel is rushing in???

StC There are 2 vent lines the one you are thinking about and the one HE is talking about.. Yours is large and goes to the fill cap, his is small and goes to the cannister..

I still use three lines on my tank. I's just saying my bud gets along fine without a return line whatever it's for. I know a lot of older cars and trucks don't have them.

Pete them older cars you refer to do not have the gasoline line running helter-skelter around the engine compartment.. HOT gasoline boiles quickly and produces bubbles that annoy the carb! It is called VAPOR LOCK and annoys the hell out of the carb.
