1990 SR5 V6 5spd PLEASE HELP! TRANNY STUCK IN REVERSE! #567213 02/12/05 03:50 AM

Hello all Im happy to join the Toyota lovers- hopefully someone can help with my prob...

I bought a 1990 SR5 Pickup 4x4 5spd V6 The truck came with 145k. The frame looks brand new which is always a good start. I noticed the cooling system had been neglected, and I had to back flush 3-4 times before I got the scale and orange muck out. So i assumed the rest of the truck was neglected...

Impressing a few friends in the light snow (foolish me) I proceeded to do a burn out that lasted till mid 2nd gear. After the smoke cleared we couldent stand the smell of BURNING CLUTCH! I figured it was the original, and needed a due replacement any how. I drove home from the incident fine- and everything was good with the (loose grabbing)clutch/tranny untill the next day.

I had to repeatedly turn the key to "off" position to get the tranny in and out of reverse and into first. I was fine driving the truck in this erratic manner and all was good in the YOTA hood...

UNTILL my dad drove the truck. He didnt know the quarks with the ill clutch/tranny issue and he proceeded to somehow jam that shift lever into reverse. And in reverse it stayed. Upon trying to get the ill trans into 1st he forced the lever out of reverse and into NEUTRAL. And neutral is where it resides (but with the tranny still in R gear)

I have the truck on jacks and have the tranny just about off- all i need to do is remove the 2nd bolt from the starter and it should slide freely- i hope. Upon visual inspection- I see gasket maker all over the tranny connections- the dude before me MUST have been toying with the tranny and or clutch.
Everything was fine and now its not.

Any suggestions on why the shift lever can be in neutral and the tranny still in reverse gear??? Before i toook the shift levers out- i played with it for about an hour trying to slide the lever back into reverse while playing with rev matching, but no luck. So whats happening? I def need a new clutch and flywheel resurface, any suggestions on a cheep alternative that withstands more abuse than the stocker? And what are some guesses with the tranny issue? Thanks so much!!!

-Ken

Look inside the shifter and see if the bushing is broken

http://www.off-road.com/toyota tech articles show you what I'm referring to.

Don't forget a throwout bearing. Nice to see you're aware of resurfacing the flywheel.

Tip on starter-- when doing clutch/tranny work is a good time for an oil change, as you can get at that inner starter bolt easier with the oil filter out of the way.

Centerforce clutches are a good choice if you think you're going to dog your rig a couple more years.

Only thing I can think of with that being a manual tranny is maybe a messed up shift fork. Don't have my FSM handy.

Thanks Kewl! I have the trans and tcase off and i seperated part of the tranny in two. Lots of metal shavings- dirt and grime. Things dont look to good I think the previous owner hadnt changed the fluid in the 145k he (or they) had it. Clutch still smells and is black.
Whats next?

Your dad thought he was driving a deuce-and-a-half in the big war. Sent the shifter into overtravel, possibly broke a split pin forcing things.

I wrote an article on overhauling an R151 tranny, a kissing cousin to your R150 (nearly identical in fact). Its here.

DO NOT attempt to overhaul the tranny without the factory service manual. I have had several guys try it despite my warning in the article to not do so. The article is not intended to replace the very excellent FSM. Be forewarned: I won't help if you do...

Gee, grumpy, ain't I?

edit: [MANDATORY TACO CONTENT] Uh, the trannies are virtually the same in the taco 5 speed too...

Need a Spot
I jammed my 96 in reverse once. After a small jerk from a buddy it dislodged. Upon further inspection i discovered the reverse gear was missing half the teeth. Hopefully yours is an easier fix.... Luck
