Getting the Wheeling Fever
How can I tell if my rear driveshaft needs to be replaced?? The mechanic told me it needed to be replaced because something inside was broke, he took a screwdriver and tapped the it and it sounded hollow inside <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />. I'm thinking this is a load of bull*****! Am I wrong?

Thanks for any input you guys might have.

Well, the driveshaft *is* mostly hollow. Unless the tubing is damaged, no need to replace it. U-joints can be replaced if they are worn or loose. The slip yoke can also be replaced if it is worn out.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
My "new" 84 ext cab has a bad vibration around 45mph. When I inspected the driveshaft, It looked like the U - joints had been replaced recently and someone had smothered the center bearing housing with silicone (the type you use on bathtubs). Any ideas on what they were trying to accomplish? What steps can I take in troubleshooting the vibration myself?

I have some tips on my web page for troublshooting driveline problems. Sounds like perhaps the center bearing is worn out, maybe it was loose and the PO was trying to keep it from moving around too much. They can be replaced or see the Tech section for how to eliminate it.
