Ok i went wheeling a little tonight with a buddy of mine. My brake light on the cj dash has been coming on randomly lately. I havent thought much about it till now. I went up a nice little hill and turned around to come back down it. My buddy called me on my cell to get me to adjust some for better pictuers. While he called i put my foot on the brakes and stopped with the pedal about halfway depressed. After 5-7 seconds of talken to him my foot starts to go deeper down with the pedel. The next thing i know the pedals to the floorboard and im rolling down hill in his direction. This was a very odd happening. So im flying down this hill now with no brakes. I left off and pumped my brakes again and i had braking power again. What could have caused this. A bad Master cylinder, or the individual pistons on the wheels. I have the master cylinder and that all under the hood. No brake booster. When its light out ill take a better look. But im hopen some night owls can guide me a little bit. Thanks guys.

Edit* The brakes would not fully engage on hills the rest of the evening but it didnt have any trouble coming home. But we still had fun!

Neat pictures.. I betcha you need a new master cyl! If you lost a wheel cyl it should mot have lost all brakes.

Thats what i was leaning towards myslef jim. It just nice to hear it from other minds. Supposedly the city is going to be building and offroading park in the near future. All of the good wheeling places are in new mexico or further south from here. This is the local spot to go make a mess at. Few small inclines. Good for testing and messing around. Get to see alot of capapble rigs in the hands of stupid drivers though. Hopefully they will learn.

Body Damage is Cool
since you don't have the booster, sounds a lot like a master cylinder issue. If your wheels had bad parts, you would know it ahead of time or could easily tell by pulling your wheel, checking for goo and sludge inside the drum or wherever your cylinders/calipers are.... if your fluid is old, you could also try to do a complete system bleeding, this will require reverse bleeding of the master cylinder and at the other ends... I did this in a mid60s ford and it did wonders.... but for you to have lost suddenly, though gradually, mmm, sounds like a busted something.
As for a place to go wolmping.... consider the Santa Catalinas in AZ.... 9200 feet of pleasure trails and hills, I recommend the fire trials if you really want a challange!
