Today it was time to adjust the valves again, so I figured I'd do the cold method this time around (I used to always do it hot) adjusted the intake at .007 and exhaust at .011 as per the FSM instructions, and like magic the valvetrain now drowns out my stereo...what gives??? Am I missing something on this? never had any problems before. Thanks

How old are the adjuster screws? Did you check their condition?
If they are worn badly, turning them won't really adjust them correctly, just make it slip/click around.

You didn't overtighten the valve cover, did you? Sometimes that gets tightened down too much and the rockers can make contact and a lot of noise. Try loosening them up a little first. I remember having to adjust the valves several times to get it running right and keeping it quiet.

Good point Jeff, Dont think that would be it though I'll have to check it tomorrow, I left the garage frustrated and gave up for today so I'll have to come back with a cool head tomorrow and see what gives. I know I only snugged up the valve cover like usual this isnt the first time I've done this, hmm I dunno. The adjusters only have 30,000 miles on them so that couldnt be it. I just dont get it this time. My neighbor came home later and he has a 94 pickup with the 4 cylinder and his is whisper quiet, all you here is a slight tick from the injectors, to hear that... that was very frustrating. Oh well try again I guess.

4 cylinder, everything else passed my visual inspection though I'm no professional. I must have just forgotten something really simple. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" />

like said above if the adjustment screws are old they will be worn in one spot. Kind of like a step on the surface and when you adjust them if you are just on the corner of said step it will beat it down pretty fast. the step I am talking about would look something like a quarter moon stamped/worn into the face of the screw.
hope that made some sort of sence. I just used a sharpening stone to round mine back down.
