Pinion Nut Size #569716 02/17/05 07:29 AM

My pinion seal is leaking. Does anyone know the size of the pinion nut? Im guessing this is an easy fix. Just a matter of removing the driveshaft, checking the amount of torque on the nut, swapping it. Any missing steps to get to the seal?
93 Pickup V6. I think Marlin has the seal... is it that a good place to get it? Or will NAPA suffice?
Thanks

The nut is 30mm. I got a 30mm impact socket from napa. You can get the seal from napa, but Marlin carries the origonal japanese seals that toyota uses which are higher quality. Be very careful to return the pinion nut EXACTLY where it was on the pinion, as there is a crush sleve inside that holds a certain amount of bearing pre-load on the pinion bearings. Dont forget to stake the nut when you're done.

30mm is the size, same for the pinion and t-case flange nuts.

FYI: napa will charge you like $30+ for that socket. go to Harbor Freight and you can get a whole "HUGE" socket set for that price. that's what i did.

I found one at HF in the random socket bin, I think it was $2 or so. You can also get one at many auto parts stores, look for front axle nut sockets, 30mm is the same size as used on VWs. But yes, you can get a full socket set for $30-40, I picked up a massive 3/4" socket set, works great for those big nuts. Slip a length of pipe over the end of the breaker bar and it'll take off the tightest fastener. Plus the big sockets make excellent arbors for pressing in/out bearings, seals, etc.

Groove in the pinion shaft, flange on the nut, center punch to dimple the flange into groove to stop the nut from loosening, stake and groove at about 4 o'clock in this picture:

Body Damage is Cool
so far every time i've tried to stake one of these nuts after removing them, they seem to just kind of break. material must've gotten brittle over the years, toyota recommends replacing them after every time they're removed
