I am looking into buying a jeep, to drive to work, and was wondering the difference between the 4 cyl. and 6 cyl. gas mileage wise.

You will have to get closer than that! Give us the year of BOTH and is it a stoplight drive or a freeway drive! The newer year model you get the better milage you will get from either. In the best of tune 18 is a good high number you could expect. Big Jim

Experience from my friends with the 4-cyl. engines in their Jeeps is that the reduced power output winds up being compensated by lower fuel economy. They compared their fuel usage compared to that of a 6-cyl. (mine) and found that they were actually getting worse mileage than the larger engine since they were having to push harder on the narrow pedal more often to do their normal driving.
This is based on a `91 YJ comparison. Improvements/restricions over the years may very well have changed all this.

I have a 95YJ with a 4cyl, 5speed. I get around 17 mpg with 31-10/50 tires. I drive it daily to work. 10 miles interstate, 10 miles curvy mountain blacktop, 6 miles steep, muddy, rocky,or dusty if it has not rained mountain road. The only time it feels weak is when I first hit the interstate which is about 3 miles up hill. I dont shift to overdrive until I get to the top of the mountain. My Jeep might do better with smaller tires but I'll probably keeep the ones I have till they are worn out. Hope this helps.

BigJim, there is a "home" they call "the farm" just up the road on my way into town.... they have movie time in the afternoon, coffee all day long and nurses to help you remember when you have to take YOUR MEDICATIONS! You are a nut.... As for getting better than other gas mileage.... I find that I get far better mileage when I put better gas in the tank. When I stop by the Vidette Country Store and fill up with their best stuff, I get crappy mileage and crappy performance. When I go to Amaco or BP, and put the good stuff in, I get great mileage and can do hills in 5th! Yea!!!!!! Keep that in mind when comparing 4 cyl vs 6 cyl....

Vidette I can see it now. In next years Jeep manual it will say "We hear from Georga that if you put "better" gasoline in here you will get more miles per gallon! So those of you buying a Jeep and living in Georga may find this to be true." Vidette 87 octane is just that, 87 octane. We all have Jeeps too and most of us cannot tell one tiny bit of difference in gasoline. Big Jim

NCBBA you keep insisting that there is more power in different gasolineÆs. Octane only helps resist predetination under pressure and temperature, that is why you can't run 87 in your 11.5:1 Camaro. Putting 92 in it doesn't raise the power; it just allows it to run without detonating. Putting 87 in an 8.8:1 motor doesn't fetch anymore power. If you have so much carbon built up that you are running too much compression, the knock sensor will detect it pinging pull the timing back, and you lose some power. Perhaps the reason yours runs so much better on higher test gas is because of carbon build up or an over active knock sensor? For all the rest of us 8.8:1 4.0Æs there is no difference in power with 87 cheapo gas, and 104 racing gas.
