Getting the Wheeling Fever
Guys, I have a crack in my Y pipe and my truck is sounding like a John Deere. I'm faced with replacing it, or just going with a header. I have a couple questions for those that have been down this road, or one like it.

On the Y pipe, Toyota dealer wants $200 for it. That's crazy talk. I figure I could find one used, in good shape for $50 or so.

On the header, I checked a couple prices, and LC and Downey are up to $350+. TRD offered one for the 22RE, but I didn't see one for my 86 4Runner.

Are Pacesetters crap? They're a lot cheaper, so I figure that's for a reason.

Anyone have tips? Anyone have a Y pipe they don't need?

Nevermind- I found a Y pipe new for $65, or $90 shipped. Much cheaper than a header, and then new exhaust after that.

Cheaper yet is to pull the Y-pipe and have a fat bead welded around the break. Common problem on this exhuast system....mine was welded back in 95-96 and hasnt shown any signs of crack re-occuring. Buddy with welder will cost ya a 6pack or bottle of sippin hooch. Shop might charge ya $20 to brush it and lay a bead.
Just my $.02.....

I thought about welding it up, but I figure it's pretty well rusted and thin around the crack. I have a MIG welder, so might give it a try.

Since you have to take it off anyway I would think about welding it first. Mine Cracked when I had my exhaust put on a few months ago.. I Took the pipe off, welded it, and it's been fine since.

I had the same problem, it seems to be pretty common. I think that one of the causes of this is the hangers rusting and the whole exhaust system pulling down on this welded seam. I have kept the hangers in good shape and have had no more problems after having it rewelded.

Sorry for the crappy photos but would this help you out? I'm keeping the manifold unless you are interested in it too, but I dont need the Y pipe anymore. was gonna trade it for some other parts I need at a junk yard but if someone on here needs it...so be it. Gimme 50 bucks to ship and all that mess and its yours.
I will snap some better pics if you need em (got new camera now). Nothing wrong with it, just upgraded to the header.
