Hello all, long time since I have been here. Anyway, I have a quick question, tryed seaching for the answer to this, but im short on time so......
I am going to help my friends dad "attempmt" to fix his his truck. Friends dad says rear diff is bad wants to take it out.
The truck is a stock 87 Toyota pick up.
My question is do I have to take the brakes apart to get the 3rd out. Or can I unbolt something on the outer part of the rear end and slide the axles out far enought to get the diff out.
Sorry if its a dumb question, just never pulled a rear diff before, and I want to be done as fast as possable.
Thanks John

4 nuts hold the backing plate studs to the end of the axle. You'll usually need to remove the e-brake cable and brake lines (cap to prevent leakage) and then pull the axles out (all the way is best, avoids seal damage).

A plug or cap, vacuum line cap for example: Or some folks plug it witha golf tee or fashion proper plugs wil an old brate fitting and crimped piece of brake line. And even capped, you *will* need to bleed the brake lines once you are done.

after getting sprayed in the eyes with brake fluid last summer while rebuilding my rear axle, i can't say i'd recommend doing that...vacuum caps would make things much easier! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" />

Sprayed in the eyes huh? Hmm...the fluid just sort of dripped out when I did mine.

If you don't mind flexing the brake lines a little, just pull the axles out a few inches without disconnecting anything.
