Getting the Wheeling Fever
Friend of mine is going to tow with a 90 4Runner 3.0 automatic. Uhaul told him his max towing capacity is 4000 lbs. Would you splice into the existing wiring to hook up a brake controller? They didn't have the wiring already hooked up like they do on a lot rigs today did they? Any towing suggestions? He's just towing a small trailer. Thanks for your time. Bret

I'd just piggyback some wiring for a brake controller. I take it he's already got a tow package for the lights, etc?
Make sure his hitch matches what he intends to tow. He can put a drawtite or even a uhaul hitch under the bumper (which sux). Tow per the trailer specs, or he'll be all over the road.

Having owned a 1990 3.0 4Runner 5-spd, I'd say that sounds like a miserable experience. If he pushes it, I would suggest a cooler for the A/T.

I think U-haul is being generous with that towing capacity. I towed an 85 4Runner on a car trailer from CO to MN in '01 using a 94 4Runner w/ 5-speed. Total weight was about 5K lbs. Horrible experience.

no, it wasnt until 92 or 93 where the wiring harness was made to disconnect and install a quick towing harness so you have to splice and dice... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

on an auto, make sure OD is off majority of the time.

and IIRC rating is a class II so 3500# max.

I was just looking at a 4 prong in-line connection set today that plugs into your factory harness AT THE TAIL LIGHTS... not like the later 92+'s that do it right at the bumper. It would have worked perfectly on my 88 4runner, Except I did the slice and dice thing 2 months ago. Place called Knechts auto parts here in Albany Oregon has them, so they are made. They are not cheap.... when compared to the slice and dice.

I tow my 4000# boat around with my 88 V6 runner. While Im not the fastest guy on the freeway, I prefer to think of it as a safety feature. Some idiot towing a 4000# boat at 85 MPH in traffic is just asking to be on the natural selection cut list. I can cruise at 60 MPH all day long... and get there alive.

Besides.... 10 MPG gasoline is still cheaper than 14 MPG diesel...and im not rackin up miles on my powerstroke.
