I swapped a W56 into my 85 4runner a few month ago w/ no problems, but never got around to connecting my backup lights or 4WD indicator in the dash.
Can anyone point me in the right direction on where to splice the wires coming off the tranny?

Reserse switch is in the tranny, driver's side near the fill plug. 4WD switch is in the t-case, passenger side near the speedo cable.

I should've been more clear. I know what the wires coming off the t-case and tranny are for. I just don't know where to tie them in.

Isn't there a few 'extra' wires under the hood from the tranny and transfer case you removed? Those wires should have been there for the tranny and transfer case you took out.

Did you do a Auto to 5-speed swap? If so then this might help, Its someone elses post that i copied and kept. I still haven't tried to hook mine up and its been about 4 years
The difficulty came with the wiring. The plugs are INCOMPATABLE. Try to get the plugs from the donor that hook up the reverse lights and ADD. There is a big white plug that plugged into the automatic. It contains the Neutral Safety Switch and reverse light wires. I tapped the Neutral Safety Switch into the bottom clutch pedal sensor so I have to push in the clutch in fully in order to start. If you just connect the wires and leave it, the cruise control won't work because it thinks you have put the car in Neutral or Park and left it there. Also, I tapped the wires from the brake light switch into the top switch of the clutch pedal so the cruise control disengages if I put in the clutch. If you don't have cruise control, don't worry. In the reverse light wires are in the white plug too. They must be cut off and wired directly to the switch on the 5-Speed found on the passenger's side. The ADD Switch, if you have it, wires into the top switch in the back top of the transfer case. There are a lot more wires left, but none are needed since the automatic is gone. Try to cap them and tuck them away or remove them. I just tucked mine away. I also left the automatic ECU in the center console.

Yes, I did the auto to 5spd swap. I have the FSM and didn't even think about it . Now I know what color wires to look for. I did have a lot of unused plugs left over after removing the auto, I'll look there first. I'll post up when I get it all worked out. Thanks.

I got the wiring hooked up yesterday and I now have working backup lights along with a functional 4WD indicator .
I have an 85 4runner, however, the wiring is supposed to be similar on trucks and 4runners up to 1994 (according to Haynes ).
I made all of the new connections underneath the intake manifold. This is where you have all of those unused wires & plugs after removing the auto tranny.
The 4WD indicator switch on the T-case just needs a single wire connection. You need to splice into a small, light green wire. It runs into a small, white, round plug that shares 2 other small wires.
The backup light switch on the tranny uses 2 wires, so you have to find 2 wires to splice into;
One of them is a small, red wire w/blue stripe. It runs into the same plug that the neutral start switch wiring runs into. It's a large, round, tan plug.
The other one is a small, solid red wire. It runs into a large, round, white plug that shares two other small wires.
I had to solder in extra wire at the manifold and routed it to the tranny. I used standard, pre-insulated, crimp-on, quick-disconnects to hook up the wiring at the tranny.
ThatÆs it.

Runningman, Your post just saved me a massive amount of decifering of wires. Just swapped in my 3rd 5spd...figured I'd hook up the backup lights since I finally got the tranny that I wanted in the truck (r151f). Thanks for the details on the wires...I owe you a few
