Need a Spot
I recently bought a 95 Wrangler with a 2.5. It is almost due an oil change. What is the best weight of motor oil to use? My engine has 149000 miles. I dont want to start a brand war, but I would welcome comments. Thanks

I see no difference in modern oil! In fact I strongly suspect it is exactly the same as modern gasoline and it comes from the nearest factory! I would bet money that the QUAKERSTATE nad PENNZOIL in Texas has NEVER seen a yankee state! I betcha it comes out of the gulf just like everything else does!
I never see horrer stories about how bad this or that oil is. All I ever see is guys bragging on how good THEIR brand is.
In east Tenn I would go with 10W30 of ANY brand of oil and be done with it.
I use WalMArt oil in some stuff and whatever is at hand in other stuff.
My 04 Chevy truck turns a light on telling me to change the oil.. It does so about every 6500 miles.

I'd have to agree with Jim. I usually use WalMart oil unless of course my local Farm&Fleet has Citgo brand on sale for $6.00 a case I once had a GM 2.5 (not in a jeep) last over 200,000 miles using whatever was on sale!

WalMart 10w30 with a new filter every 3k miles is my vote. For under $7 per oil & filter change you can do this yourself. I am trying to remember who makes WalMart oil - I think I heard it was QuakerState?

Anyway, just change it religiously every 3k w/ a new filter and you will be fine. Like the man said, you don't hear of oil quality problems today.

The higher quality oils brake down slower than the cheap generic brands. If you off-road the jeep alot, get a good thick paper filter and buy your oil in bulk. Off-roading puts a horrible strain on the engine and sucks up 2-3 times as much particulate as street driving. The oil will get dirty and sludge alot faster than normal oil, and will brake down faster too. Usually when I off-road my jeep hard I change the oil every 2-3K miles, and I use some of the cheapest stuff I can find that doesn't drop oil pressure by the time I change it. On all my street cars I run synthetics just to delay the change interval. I wouldn't put synthtics into a higher milage motor that has a small leak. Synthetics have VERY good detergents that will clean out any dirt around a seal that might be helping to plug it up.

I guess the real question is.. how do you drive it?

Body Damage is Cool
Oil has to meet SAE standards. If a particular oil meets the manufacturers recomendations on SAE grade (SF SG whatever) and viscosity, its good enough. Use the cheapest brand that meets specs and save the spare change for something else.
