Update 4/23/05 Working outside on the Trooper yesterday, looked over at the neighbors garage and hmmm... that looks like a Rodeo.
Good news, the police recovered their Rodeo about 5 days after the theft. It was found in the backyard of a gentleman with outstanding warrants. After dealing with the legal aspects to recover the vehicle and then to the dealership for repairs (Ignition screwed up, drivers side window broken, dash scuffed up from not so gentle removal of radio) they got their lovable little rodeo back home. So all in all it was gone about one month.

My neighbors have a 98ish Rodeo. The other morning she went out to the rodeo, started it up (still in the garage, with the garage door open) thought oops, I forgot my coat. Ran in grabbed her coat, less that 60 seconds later walked back out to an empty garage

Here in Lakewood, CO leaving your car running unattended aka "Puffing" is against the law. Something like 70% of vehicles stolen during the fall/winter months were left running with the keys in the ignition.

One man, after his Puffin car was stolen and he had just finished giving his account to the police was quite shocked to learn that he was gong to recieve a ticket for leaving his car running.

Minneapolis has that law, too. We don't call it "puffing", though - first I've heard that term.

Why is it against the law?

What about leaving your car running without the keys in the ignition?

Say for example a remote started car. It runs without the keys. If someone gets in and tries to get it out of gear without the key in the ignition and turned to the on position, it immediately dies.

My Passport enjoys puffing especially when it's really cold.

ummm, there is one big detail missing here.... was the rodeo stolen?!?

I am pretty sure puffing (I've heard other names too), but from what I hear, it's basically illegal cause your basically giving your car away, but it inconveniences the cops. (but thats just heresay, it would make more sense to me that it is excessive pollution and Denver has horrible air)

i think thats baloni! cars on my property, running and you turn your back and "somebody" steals it, it's my fault. what's next, leave your door in your house unlocked and if someone rips you off it's your fault and you get a ticket.ya know..... talk about adding insult to injury. thats some wrong stuff man.

Its not only about leaving the car running so it can get stolen, You are also polluting. I cant remember who said it ,but you only need to let your car warm up 10-15 secs to get the oil running through it. Even though it was only 60 secs and she wasnt letting it warm up, it just prevents other people from doing that. Puffing reminds me of times back in the day, sitting there, not moving, making smoke with buddies

That's just horrible. Can't even let your car warm up and someone has to go and steal it. I let my Trooper warm up at least 10 minutes before I drive it, in the dead of winter. It get mighty cold here to just get in, start it up and and drive.

Same law here in California. Yeah, it sucks that you can't let your car warm up without it getting stolen. Out here, even in Los Angeles, people will leave their cars running while they run into 7-11 to buy beer or whatever. It's because of those brain surgeons that we have to have all these great laws to protect the people who don't know how to protect themselves.

Man thats just wrong IMHO, in the cold dark mornings of feb. here in Maine I let my Amigo warm up for 20 minutes sometimes, just too cold not to. Hope she gets her Rodeo back.
