I know that Jeep has come out with the 2005 Liberty CRD (Common-Rail Diesel) for us US buyers. It is great that there is another diesel addition to the available diesel vehicles you can buy here in the states. I received the brochure for the 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD about 2 months ago and had a question about something in it. Maybe someone who has the same brochure can help with this question. On the 2nd page Jeep writes "We offered our first diesel-powered Jeep vehicle in 1961." And at the bottom right of that page they give you a picture of that vehicle. It is a 1961 Jeep CJ-5 4x4. My question is are these Jeeps extremely rare and were they available in later years or just for 1961? What diesel engine was used for that 1961 model? Seems as one would be great as an off-road project. Just a part of Jeep history I don't know about and am interested in learning. I certainly don't have enough money to buy a brand new Liberty diesel now.

The Perkins 192 4cyl diesel was an option in CJ5's and CJ6's from 1961 to 1965. I believe it safe to say they're pretty rare. I'd love to have one!

I was thinking that the engine was a Perkins, but wasn't exactly sure. Being a Perkins diesel, I bet it was very reliable. That is cool they made the diesel for 5 years and not just one or two. Thanks for your info.

Yeah, If I found one I could get cheap I'd dump the old 258 in a heartbeat! The perkins's have a good reputation as an all around industrial power plant. Lots of them in boats all over the world as propulsion and Generator sets.

Sorry for jumping in but I'm a big diesel fan myself I have a 97 Dodge 3500 turbo diesel and I getting ready to repower my 88 Montero with diesel (4D55) from Mitsu D50 plus going to run it on 100% biodiesel. Geez I sure wish they were more oil burners out there.

Take care Jeep guys and gals (I'm on the Mitsu list)

Diesels are fun. I think you would need somethin pretty powerful to handle the gear ratios you would have on a Jeep though....
Perkins.
We lived off of some crappy gennies in Iraq for about a year before 10 were replaced by two perkins driven gennies. That company's name speaks for itself when it comes to power and overall life and performance. I would pounce on one if I could afford it....

91 Jeep Wrangler YJ, carpet, tires, trailer hitch. yea....

Hello,

I'm new to this board. I joined to get info on my Montero Sport but also have a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD. The engine is made by VM Motori in Italy and has been well proven in Europe. I've corresponded with several European Cherokee CRD owners who have nothing but praise for this engine. In fact, most European diesel enthusiasts rate this engine as reliable as the Mercedes diesels. So far, we are very impressed with this engine. I hear the Wrangler will be getting the CRD in 2007.

Italy produces something besides crime? What is next? France will come up with a product?
Are you sure the of the rating? Maybe the rating is what the godfather told them to rate it at.

Not exactly a mafia-run operation. Roger Penske is Chairman of VM Motori. Check it out here
