Different Lug bolts on FJ-40? #584832 03/24/05 09:42 PM

I'm posting for a friend:

1978 FJ-40 w/front disc brakes

Problem:

He took his vehicle to a mechanic to have the front disc brake rotors changed. The mechanic ordered the rotors, but the holes in the new rotors where the lug bolts stick through are larger than the lug bolt holes in the old rotors. IÆd say the new ones look like they are for ¢ö lug bolts, while the old ones are maybe around 3/8ö.

The mechanic said the previous owner must have coverted the FJÆs original disc brakes to those from a CJ-5. I donÆt see how this could be the case. Everyone who knows anything about 4x4s knows that Toys have a 6 on 5.5ö lug bolt pattern while older jeeps are 5 on 5.5ö.

Did certain model FJ-40s come with different size lug bolts? If so, which year had the front disc brake rotors with the lug holes drilled to accept the smaller lug bolts??

I know, a lot of wasted time and money ... if I knew then what I know now....

Doubtful they are SAE sizes unless they are jeep parts. SI units(or metric in laymans terms)are more common. 10mm or so.

I would have them re-order the right rotors. Why on earth would anyone convert over the entire hub assembly just for the rotors? However, Chevy's had 6 0n 5.5 patterns for a number of years. 80's into the early 90's I think?

Body Damage is Cool
That mechanic has been inhaling too much brake cleaner. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> There are two types of Land Cruiser rotors and they both have the same diameter studs and pattern. 6 on 5.5 The only difference in the rotors is if he needs the type where you pound the wheel studs into the rotor or the much more expensive ones that you do not. This is based on which hub he has. He probably has the expensive non pound in type since he has a 78 front axle. HTH

My 79 uses the non pound in expensive type and I can walk downstairs and get you the Toyota part number off the box if you want.

OK, I had to go down the basement anyway so 43512-60011 is the Toyota number for the six hole expensive rotors.
