I got an '89 LWB 3.0 that smokes, but runs great. The valve seals are getting replaced, but if that doesn't cure the problem, is there something else I should be looking for? Thanks in advance. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Ring wear could also cause the smoke - but it's more likely the valve seals. A compression test will show ring wear.

Lower end would usually be oil control rings. Upper end would be valve seals (it's upper end - on this motor? even if your lower end is also having some blow-by the top end needs attention I'm sure).
It's also possible you're blowing too much crank gas into the intake - that happens on my volvo from time to time. Can't remember is the 3.0 is prone to the same issue.

That's good, but unless you check every one, you can't be sure.

Also, if the PCV valve hasn't been replaced, try that.

The valve seals should take care of your problem. Most of the 3.0 heads that I've rebuilt had bad seals.

I replaced the valve seals on my 91 at 120,000 miles and it didn't fix the problem. Once I replaced the heads, the problem was solved. The seals were definitely bad but they weren't the only problem on my engine.
I'm not sure if there is a way to tell when the valve seals are enough or when the entire top end needs to be redone. Anybody have any ideas?

Forgive my ignorance but where would the heads come into play if the VS were replaced?

Frank I agree, it was the previous owner that checked and informed me, he's now doing the seals and then we'll see.
