By testing the transistor that way, does that mean the transistor is good or just the coil? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" />

Good - where'd you get a transistor only? New or used?

I was hoping it was a place we could buy new spares - but as long as it works, no matter whether it's new or used to me - those things seem to work for either 10 seconds or 15 years. At that price it's good to have a spare - if for nothing else - troubleshooting.
If your truck is the same as mine, you still have an LC filter and a capacitor on the coil assembly (backside underneath. I suppose either one could cause a problem but I haven't dealt with either.

Think about the tests that i gave you. The distributor toggled the 5 volts right? Ok so this signal goes to the MPI control unit which in turn supplies a small voltage the the base of a NPN transistor in the power module. You state that when you performed the transistor test, the coil fired. That means the power transistor and coil are good. Your problem is either in the wiring from dist.to the MPI or MPI to power transistor or simply a bad MPI control unit. A am basing this on what your test results. Good luck

Well, I guess that's all I have left I received the transistor and it did not help. If it is the MPI unit, wouldn't it give me some kind of code, besides "normal state" code? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> I will chase wires now. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

I haven't read this thread thoroughly but has anyone suggested the ECU aka the computer?

I didnt read the entire reply thread, but check the ingition fuse, sometimes the connectors can get too wide so it gets a bad connection, especially if youve got accessories jerry rig tied up around that fuse.
