Hi guys I drive a bone stock '97 T-100 4x4 5spd with 55.5k on it. My question is is it worth it to dump a $800 TRD LSD (better or as good for less $$?)in the back of my truck? and can I do it? I Live in SW MI and we get our fair share of snow I don't really do any off roading but I use this truck as my main transportation and hunting vehicle so I have to slog through the mud/snow to get to where I'm going sometimes. As for the installation I've looked at a few pics of it is it really that hard? I consider my ability to work on things above average(never taken anything apart and not been able to get it back together and have it work). Also one more question are there any cheaper mods besides the super to get some more power.(Headers are out unless someone knows where I can get a set for $500 or so).
Thanks
Flannelman

Edelbrock makes a set that will work with the 5 spd, youll have to get a cross-over pipe made to hook it up to your existing exhaust though.

TRD/Kazuma was selling the TRD LSD's for about $250, not sure if they are still. Yes its worthwhile, especially for that price. No, you should probably not install it yourself. Its the kind of thing that "If you have to ask..."

I think you can do way better on the price. I picked up a new in box LSD from a Toyota dealership in Texas in December for $200 delivered and had a 4x4 shop in Denver install it for $250. Can't remember the name of the dealership but they had bunches of those things and they were selling them on E-Bay.
I think that the LSD is awesome, works perfectly!! Very highly recommended. You should pursue it but keep looking for a better price.

So far the cheapest I've found is $350 Here I looked on ebay and couldn't find any but maybe I didn't use the right search terms <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />. If anyone could provide me a good link I'd appreciate it. I guess I'd fork over the cash to a shop if I could get it done for $250. Ideally I'd like to keep the total cost under $500. As to doing it there isn't really that much involved? pull the brakes, the shafts, then pull off the side halfs(can't remeber the proper name) off the diff, then unbolt the rear cover and pull the actual gears or is there more to it?

You can pull the 3rd member yourself and bring it to the diff shop and save yourself a bunch on labor.
The diff carrier needs to have bearings pressed on/off and then have the backlash reset using new carrier bearing washers. That should be pretty cheap ($100?).
The only thing that would keep me from doing it myself is that I don't have a set of the washers to choose from to reset the backlash. They are a dealer only item, AFAIK. I would do it on the older style diffs with screw carrier bearing adjusters in a heartbeat.
