Need help with tensioner pully problems #589628 04/06/05 07:07 PM

Hi, When I pulled the tensioner pully off it was fine. Now its jacked up. The dealer wants $70 for a new one. The recycling yards are picked clean around here. Anyone have any tips on this? Any one seen this happen before?

mine is like that too, and the replacement I got from ebay was also like that (the seller said it came off an engine with 82,000 miles - i have no reason to disbelieve them)

chews up the front edge of the belt, but I haven't got the "round tuits" necessary to replace it yet. I do keep a spare belt in the truck.

If you have the GM engine you can get one for a 1990 chevy V6 for about 40.00 new.

I did some searching around and found that the S10, S15, And the Sonoma had the 2.8. Anybody know of anything else?

You know what we need? An online parts interchange. You know, where you could plug in a part and find out what cars had it.

That would be great just plug in 2.8 under engines and pop you'd have them all... Pardon me I was dreaming there

Why does it do this? I put on a new belt last September, and just replaced it 6 weeks ago. Does a new tensioner resolve the issue?

I'm hoping. Take a good look at the pic. The tensioner is a 1/4 inch out of alignment, and there is only 5" of belt between it and the water pump pully.

The thing that gets me, when I took it off it was fine. I've had my trooper for 3 years and never replaced the belt.

This motor was in MANY different cars. You can find it in the Trooper, in the Cherokee, and in a host of intermediate-sized GM cars.

Such a beast is available, by application, known as the Hollander Parts Interchange System... junkyards use it. It ain't free, though.

BTW, any good autoparts store should have a reference book full of idlers and pulleys (ask for the Gates book if they don't know what to look for). These books are thin on applications, but you can often work laterally from the dimensions of the part you have and back out the part that you need.

car-part.com does a good job of parts interchange and its online. For instance if you throw in camaro 3.4 engine, you'll get all listings of comparable 3.4 engines. They don't list tensioner pulleys though.

Need a Spot
You think YOU have problems. My Chilton says just put a 1/2" ratchet head in the tensioner to loosen when removing the belt. The front of my tensioner is a standard bolt head! I bought a belt for $32 and the local shop won't install it due to warranty. They want $104 to replace with their own belt. Chiltons is not much help for most things that I've had to do.

Love my '91 and '02 Troopers, yet still old and in the way. Stock can be fun too!

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Guys:
There is an index pin on the back of the tensioner, If you miss the hole it can give you this problem.
