Can 4Runners rear seats fold flat?... for sleeping #591771 04/12/05 09:31 AM

I need a vehicle I can sleep in the back. I'm 5'9" 160lbs. I need a flat surface inside the vehicle for a good night sleep.

Can the 4Runner rear seats fold flat so it's level with the rear cargo area? If not flat, can the rear seat-backs be removed to provide a fairly flat surface if I used some padding over the seats and use my backpack to fill the rear seating floor area?

It seems to me the older 4Runners are longer... with more room in the back.. is this true? If I slept diagonally, would my 5'9" body fit? I'd require 6" of length for a comfortable sleep.

I used to have a 93 SR5 pickup with a camper shell that I could sleep in the truck bed comfortably with my dog. What
about the 4Runner?

Thanks!
Nelson

What year are you asking about? The 84-89 4Runner rear seats do fold flat. The seat bottoms lift forward and the seat back folds down flat. I imagine the 90-95 is the same.

I know the 3rd gens do as well (the seats can be put down flat 96-02), but I have never measured it, but I dont think its big enough, then again Im about 6'2 so Im a bit skewed...

Yes, the 3rd Gen seats do fold flat. I am just under 5'8" and can sleep back there just fine. Anyone taller than 5'9" might have to sleep a little bit diagonally, but it isn't a problem.

This is the trick: The rear seat bottoms are attached to the truck by only two bolts per side. It is super simple to get a 12mm (I think) socket in there and unbolt the bottoms. Just fold them up towards the front seats and the bolts are exposed. I put the bolts back in the empty holes so I don't loose them and remove the seat bottoms. You can gain at least 4 more inches of useable space this way, plus it makes it easier to crawl into the back from the drivers seat!

Great. Thanks for the info guys. Now I just need to decided between a Tacoma and a 4Runner. I'll start a new thread for a change of subject.

Thanks again for the help.
