Getting the Wheeling Fever
my trans has been grinding when i try to put it in reverse when it should just slip in, the slave cylinder and clutch are in fine working condition and the trans is tight and quiet going down the road. It seems that if i set for a second and let the engine revs come allllll the way down to idle and wait a sec it will work, im wondering if this could be an early warning sighn or is it normal...

Sounds fairly normal to me. However, I have not owned a Toy with less than 150k on the odo.

By the way, where in MI are you from? I live on the west coast in Holland.

It's been a long time since I had the 4 runner, but I know on the rav 4, sometimes you have to put the car in first, jockey it a tad, then shift into reverse. If you're not in the right position, it won't just slip in.

Try shifting into fourth before putting it in reverse. I do that all the time as mine sometimes gets hung up in between. It never grinds though, just gets hung up. I also have to let the clutch out a 1/2" or so and it goes in smoothly. It hasn't engaged at all at that 1/" before floor point.

I have found that as well, sometimes it wont go into reverse so i put it in first and then reverse, so it sounds like its normal

Body Damage is Cool
I've never driven a yota that goes into reverse easily. My tranny that is smooth in 1-5 always has toruble with reverse. I find if you go into 1st and then slam into R right way it works usually.

my 94's 5spd... I have to put it in 4th or 1st then Reverse. rev is not the smoothest engagment in toyotas. my Supra was the same way. just be patient and play with it. you'll get it. I don't even notice it anymore. Only when I 1st got my supra then again in my 4runner.

i know that on the yota 5-spd the reverse gear is the weak link in the tranny's. i know that it is also a forward cut gear so it tends to be weaker and it binds.

now i have a little grinding when i down shift in to second mostly and this is at almost all speeds faster than 25 on the speedo. it never used to do it when i got the truck 10,000 miles ago?. and i have found that normal shifting in to 2,3,4 is gettin a little more effort needed, they dont grind unless i really jam it fast but mainly it has started since i put the new clutch in and all my adjustments are in spec. so im just hoppin it has been just a lazy foot and i dont know it? well i will try to more consiously pushing my foot all the way to the floor to see if that helps, and shift slower. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

I have the same problems with mine. Problems going into reverse, just hit 4th and it goes right in. Grinds trying to down shift into 2nd. Mine started after the truck sat for 4 months. I'm going to try syn tranny fluid and see if that helps.

How much rotational play is supposed to be in the flanges on the transfer case and 3rd member i.e. driveshaft. Mine can rotate about 1/2" in both directions. to make it a little clearer. If I grab the drive shaft I can rotate it clockwise and counter-clockwise. Is that normal? Just wondering if that is causing the problem.
