Body Damage is Cool
i used a torque wrench to torque the top oil pump bolt down to 18 ft. lbs. and it stripped out i tried tapping it and then using a longer bolt but no luck its too stripped out. could i drill it out a little larger and then use a heli-coil? or would metal shavings get behind the timing cover? any other ideas?

that bolt screws into the aluminum timing cover, only. there's nothing behind it except the timing chain and a straigt drop to the oil pan, so dont' worry about the shavings too too much. I forget what the published torque is on that bolt, but I think someone screwed up the metric conversion on it when it was put in English units. Iv'e see na few rigs run without that bolt and have no problems.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
You could always tap it out for a larger bolt.
ie if the bolts 10 x 1.25 tap out to 11 x 1.25, ect.
Or you could use a insert. They are more solid and reliable than a helicoil.
Or you could run with out it and hope it doesn't leak.

Did the bolt have any oil or threadlock on it? If so wet torque values are lower due to the reduction in friction between the bolt and hole threads (especially steel bolts into aluminium housings). I would drill it out and retap larger or helicoil/threaded insert, either way you are making the hole larger. Leave all of the oil in the pan and then drain it after you drill it out, so any chips get carried out with the oil.

>>>*We set up a shop vac, that will draw out most of the chips as you repair the threads. Tap and install a helicoil, be sure to coat the helicoil in good RTV.

Then install the bolt, also seal the threads to avoid leaks.

DO NOT use a longer bolt.....*EB
