I went with shackles, they went on in about 30min and they do the job.

I put in some 1" lift blocks. You need longer u-bolts if you go with lift blocks or add-a-leafs. You won't with longer shackles.

Ok thanks,im 16 and this is my first truck.Would the shackles be a job that me,my dad,and a buddy could do in about a day w/out much extra cost,or should I go w/ the add-a-leaf or lift blocks. Also how do I tell what size shackles to get(if I go with that option, which I probably will).STANDARD or GREASABLE the price is about 30$ more for greasable. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Rear shackles are a snap. Just did a set on my truck this weekend. Easiest way I found was to pull the tires, jack it up by the bumper with a Hi-lift, and set a hydraulic bottle jack under the pumpkin. Take the load off the spring pack, and undo the bolts. 17mm socket (3/4") worked on my truck. use a hammer and a punch, to drive out the stock shakle. Install the shackle on the frame, then adjust the axle to the right height and place the bolts. Tighten (not too much, or you'll limit articulation but make sure their not coming off). Your done.

Things to consider: Shocks long enough? Brake line long enough?

As far as the greasable bolts, Not sure it makes a big difference. If you have problems with the shakles binding, it may help some. Not convinced it's worth the extra $$.

Best of luck,

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did.

his shocks and brake line will be fine due to the 1st gens saggy butt. all hes gonna do is restore the stock ride height.

On my 88 4Runner I used the 1" lift blocks and then had to adjust the torsion bars to make the front level with the back. My truck has 143K miles on it. It still looks like the back is a little higher. So I would think you only need 1-1.5" of lift in the back. You could go 2" and crank the front torsion bars to match the height, but you probably can't get the front aligned after that and you'll wear out the front tires unevenly. Here's my 88 4Runner. It's tough to tell with it on the sloped driveway, but the front and back are pretty much level. Remember, the front fenders have a bigger opening than the rear quarters so you have to measure from the bottom of the body along the rocker panel to check the height.
