alright so some new problems arose over the past 2 weeks. after a day of wheeling in some mud 2 sundays ago i started having some sumble problems with my YJ. it started the monday afterwards. on the way home from class (drove fine to class). i get like a stumble feeling from my jeep, very suttle but it occurs after the jeep is warmed up for a little bit. there is a popping sound that i took as my air filter flopping around but found that was secure in place. once it starts it just dont stop like a pringles can f chips i cant go over 2000rmp in any gear but in neautral it is fine coasting and will rev up with no noticable engine problems. i found that if i turn off the jeep like say at a stop light the problem will go way for about anyther mile or so depending on how far i've already driven.today the problems were. very bad. on a drive to a soccer game i pulled over to let it chill but found it was very hard to stop and wouldnt turn to the right very easily. once i got over i found my fornt left brake locked so poured some water to try and help. which it did after much smoke and smell. (sogoing to replace brakes) what i dont understand is thatonce it starts stalling at 2 grand i feel as tho i have no fuel pressure, i have no throttle body responce unless im ging down a hill.

some things that have crossed my mind are: fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter, and just recently brakes. tho i find it odd that it will work fine if shut off and back on again for some time. maybe some CPU probs? as my tail lights and turn signals stopped working

any help would be appriciated and ask questionsto help diagnose the problem(S).

thnx Reign

Did you get the exhaust REALLY wet? Were you charging the mud coming in hot? Sounds like a cat. problem to me.... Have a buddy rev it to 2-3 grand while your head is out pack listening to the exhuast. If it sounds whsitley, then somthing is obstructing it. You can also temporarily remove the O2 sensor and zip tie it out of the way to see if the extra 1" hole will help power. Does it run fine cold?

I agree its probly your cat. I had the thing go on my car it just sounds like a poping. With mine i could go under and shake the cat around and hear the noise but yours might not have got to this point. Do what he said and u will be able to find out if thats the problem.

sorry guys about the dely in response as i have another daily driver. and havent gotten around to it yet,
but i do remember about 2 weeks ago i will give it some throttle and if i went over 2000rpm it would gurgle, or make little mummbel sound. would that be a symptom as a bad cat?

Howdy reign
They are talking about a cat that is stopped up and will not let enough exhaust thru to go faster than it is going now... It does sound like a cat or an electrical component. !Like they said you can usually stand behind it and have someone goose the thing.. Most times you will be able to hear a difference in the sound that will tell you it is stopped up.

ok so i may just hack the the thing off tom mourn when i get a minute and see if there is a difference, and if the probs fixed i guess its time for me to go get a high flow cat... but i dont understand how after that one trip that could have happend.... it was fairly dry compared to usual as i've been in much deaper there and multiple other places. any suggestions to prevent this from happening in the future?

All things stress fatigue when they are heated and cooled, and can only do it so many times. You might have just hit the limit that cat. can be rapidly cooled then re-heated. Or you have been running a hair rich for a while over working the cat and over heated it. There are a lot of things that can kill a cat. The best preventative maintenance is keeping the motor running well. If it stays around 12-14:1 and the motor isn't missing, it should last the maximum amount of time it can.

if it isnt too much trouble could anyone explain how a cat works and how mine is failing so i can gain some substancial knowledge from this and be able to apply it in the future either with my own vehicle or a friends

I can make a stab at it in Texas terms..
I have seen two kinds one is full of catalyst beads and the other has the catalyst formed in sort of a mesh or web inside the steel container,
What happens is the catalyst gets hot as the exhaust passes through it and eats (burns again?) the stuff it is intended to get rid of that is in the exhaust..
When you get foreign matter or too much fuel in the catylist, or even after the intended amount of time.. The catylist grows shut and disallows ehhaust to pass through.. Then it is time for another converter..
Sunder will prolly get on here and give all the technical names and stuff later..
