I have a 1997 Toyota 4 Runner Limited and would like to replace the original shocks/struts with something that will smooth the ride out some. It's alittle stiff and you seem to feel every crack in the road.
I would like to get a set of Summer/Rain & Highway tires to go with the new shocks to. I'm currently running top of the line "Michelin MTS mud & snows" I think they are called heavily siped and they seem loud on the highway. Someone told me Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza's.
Any info is muchly appreciated.

The best riding shocks (and suspension) are Old Man Emu.

That's a matter of opinion.
IMHO, the OME stuff is a bit too stiff for my taste. And I had the "comfort" valved shocks too. I would recommend it if you want "control," but not if you want "smooth."

I just installed the Tokico TrekMaster's and am more than happy with them for ride quality over OEM. Much more controlled ride even with running 285's. My ride overall is a little bit more stiff but that's probably due to running a much stiffer and larger tire.
'98 4Runner, SR5, V-6, 5-speed, 35" Baja Claws, 17x9 Eagle Alloys, E-Locker, 3" Susp Lift, 3" Body Lift, Elbow mod, Deckplate Mod, "D" gasket mod, Silverstars, Headlight Film, 67" TG Sliders...
Next on the list: 4:88 gears

You need to make sure the following technical service bulletin was/is performed on your vehicle first. "SU002-98 JUN 98 Suspension - Improved Ride Comfort for Rear Seat"
I currently have a 2001 4Runner but my previous 97 4runner LTD had a poor ride due to a problem with the rear springs/bump stops. I even replaced all the shocks hoping that would fix the problem. Then I found out about the tsb above that is the real fix.
Problem is now that your vehicle is this old you will have to pay for it yourself. I believe the problem was corrected mid model year '98.
My 2001 rides unbelievably better. Most friends could not believe I bought another 4Runner as much as I complained about the ride but the '01 was much better. I ended up trading my '97 in for the '01 and didnt get the tsb done....
