Anybody ever have a problem with their windshield wipers (or something nearby) buzzing/chattering when at highway speeds?

The goofy thing is, it goes away if there's moisture (i.e. I hit the squirters). But as soon as it dries out it chatters again.

I've tried:

1) replacing the blades (twice)
2) Putting electrical tape over the vents
3) Putting electrical tape over the rubber windshield molding
4) Putting electrical tape over the squirter nozzle assemblies
5) Removing the wiper blade completely

Right now I'm thinking maybe the arm tensioner spring is vibrating?

Laua's 94 LS has the same problem. It turned out that it IS the windshiled trim. I taped around the windshield trim and it stopped. when the tape started to pull away, I got the brilliant(?) idea of using silicon caulking and seal it all up. Evidently I didn't get enough or in the right place. I'm going to keep trying and I'll let you know how it works out.

BOTH our GenIIs do that...I tried the silicone on mine, and it didn't solve the problem. We even had my wife's windshield replaced, and it's STILL there...the best fix I've found SO FAR is to TURN UP the RADIO!!

Really?

If it is, it sounds like it must be the trim right below the wiper then... unless the sound is "travelling".

(As an aside, my buddy and I were initially convinced it was a speedo-cable squeal... so on the 1000 mile trip back from FL, we stopped and dis-assembled the dash assembly... only to find that it's a completely electronic speedo 500 miles later, we happened to was the windows and realized the sound went away.)

So, I put about an 18" piece of electrical tape on the lower trim piece, and the noise didn't go away...

Perhaps next step is tape around the entire thing, just to rule it out once and for all.

Body Damage is Cool
Mine recently developed same problem. It's definetely a windshield trim. So far best solution is to spay littl windshield washing fluid while driving. It shuts it down completely.Guess it gets into gap and prevents molding from vibrating. For how long depends on how hot and dry it is outside.

There's a TSB instructing to use silicone sealant (preferably black) along the backside of both side and top windshield trim. I've done quite a few and haven't had any problems or comebacks at all. It's best to get it as close to the inside portion (where it contacts the window) as possible without going over. Should you go over, one quick wipe with a towel is all it takes.

Okay, then I must have just done a crappy job sealing mine! LOL I'll hit it again when it warms up some.

Yes!

I stopped about 4 times this morning, prgressivey taping more and more area. When I taped up the top portion of the trim along the windshield, it finally stopped!!

I could have SWORN the noise was originating at the bottom of the window.

Any recomendations for brand/type of sealant to use? Or perhaps the text of the TSB?

Thanks.

They say to use 3M-08661 silicone sealant. This from TSB 97-42A-004 dated April 1997
